“My formative childhood years were spent in a country life around a bucolic setting of blue skies, song birds, tall trees, native grasses, and flowing streams. I played outside from sun up to sun down, climbing trees, moving dirt, splashing water, exploring and being curious about the world. This direct connection with nature allowed me to see how and why "biophilia" is so important to design.
When I was 6 years old and a first year student at Vivian Fowler elementary in Mt. Pleasant Texas, my teacher, Mrs. Neal read to us an old Yiddish folk tale. This story had a profound effect on my mental perception of space. That is the instant I started the critical thinking path to visualize both volume and scale.
At nine years old I pulled my first all nighter to complete a project. The 24x36 poster was for a fire prevention design contest. During this project, by accident I discovered the artistic shading process and how it added depth and dimension. I told my grandmother the only way to make this perfect was to draw the individual trees, so I set about drawing over a thousand trees in typical iconic A-frame form, which I completed by sunrise. I then went to school and proudly displayed my poster. Later that day, after the judges had critiqued all the entries, mine was selected as the best and I was presented with the first place plaque.” - Myles Caldwell
